Meet Clark Summer Associate Katharine Luu
July 19, 2024

Clark's summer associate program offers students opportunities to build their skills in real-world scenarios, including making connections and developing their networks. During the 12-week program, participants gain insight into the daily planning, decision-making, and communication required for successful projects.
Hear firsthand about the experience from Katharine Luu, a Clark summer associate working on the ATL Plane Train Tunnel West Extension project in Atlanta, Georgia.
Describe your role at Clark.
As a summer associate, I am exposed to different aspects and phases of a construction project through observation and learning about the project plan and engineering.
Although every day on the site is different, I typically observe site walks to better understand the project and to help identify safety breaches, help write RFIs (requests for information), submittals, and change orders, and then join meetings with the owner and trade contractors to review the overall management of the project.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Sugar Land, Texas, a city near Houston. My parents are from Vietnam, and I have one older brother. Since I am new to Georgia this summer, I have been enjoying exploring new restaurants and visiting cool places such as the Beltline, a miles-long walking trail through the city.
Where do you go to school?
I am a senior industrial engineering student at Texas A&M University. I am an officer of Alpha Phi Mu – an Industrial and Systems Honors Society – where students in the department connect with companies and faculty over a shared interest in continuous improvement and efficiency.
"I love getting hands-on experience with contract documents and then walking on site and seeing how that project plan is reflected. I also enjoy the team I work with: they have made this experience educational and fun!"
Katharine Luu, Clark Summer Associate
What is a fun fact that someone might not know about you?
I have been to one of the seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu, and hiked to the top of Huayana Picchu Mountain, which is 2,693 meters above sea level.
How have your background or interests shaped you into the builder you are today?
I have always wanted to pursue a career where I can lead with my heart and my mind. Construction is an industry where I can tap into my love for STEM and critical thinking while also being collaborative and team focused. I have always been surrounded by teamwork, whether it be in sports or school organizations. It is fun to have this aspect of life reflected in my career.
What drew you to Clark?
I was drawn to Clark because of the large emphasis on teamwork. I have a strong interest in engineering, and Clark offers opportunities to see different stages of construction and take part in the project's success with my team.
What has been your favorite part of your Clark eXperience?
Though I have only been with Clark for a short time, my favorite part so far has been the immersive aspect of my summer associate role. I love getting hands-on experience with contract documents and then walking on site and seeing how that project plan is reflected. I also enjoy the team I work with: they have made this experience educational and fun!
